The Maze Runner tells the story of a group of boys who live in what they call “the Glade”, a secluded enviroment surronded by walls that open up during the day onto a maze but a shut every night. The thing is these boys don’t remember anything about their previous lifes, their memories have been swiped clean. They only know that once a month a “newbie” arrives in what they call “the Box”, which is actually a lift. They have also found a way to build a stable society and each Glader is assigned to a particular group that is in charge of either cooking, working the fields, looking after the animals, slaughtering them, running into the maze… Their memories have been swiped but the one thing they are sure about is that their only mission is to brave the maze during the day to try and find their way out.

Thomas arrives one day in the lift and like all the others has no recollection of his past life. He can’t remember anything but some of the Gladers seem to recognize him. He then learns that there are creatures lurking around in the Maze and if you get stung you get some of your memories back. People that seem to know who he is seem to think that he will bring the end of the world as they know it. Thomas also feels in his bones that he was brought into the Glade to be a runner and venture into the maze each day. The actor who will be portraying Thomas is Dylan O’Brien most know for playing Stiles Stilinski on the hit MTV show Teen Wolf.

Another key character in the book is Teresa. The day after Thomas arrives in the Glade, Teresa arrives unconscious. The thing is that newbies only ever arrive once a month… and now two have arrived in just two days.

Also Teresa is the only girl. Thomas feels an instant connection to her, he gets the feeling he knew her before his memory was swiped clean. Being the only girl isn’t the only mystery that Teresa brings along with her; she also delivers the message that she is the last one and that the beginning of the end has arrived. Kaya Scodelario (Skins) will potray Teresa in the film. Finally she has landed a role in a film adaptation of a teenage saga as her name was up to become Katniss in the Hunger Games.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually, Game of Thrones) will potray Newt one of the few Gladers who will become one of Thomas’ best friends and confidante. A bit of a leader he will play a huge part in making sure that all hell does not break loose and that every one keeps level-headed so they can work together to beat the enigma that the Maze poses.

As the end of their world as they know it is upon them they will all band together in one last effort to fine the exit from the Maze. Thomas sometimes dreams up what he thinks are old memories and he discovers that he and Teresa might be the only ones who have the key to freeing the others as they feel a deep connection to the Maze and everything that is going on around them.

Dystopian sagas seem to be all the rage at the moment. Following the success of The Hunger Games we’ll also soon be able to see Divergent by Veronica Roth brought to life on the big screen as well as The Maze Runner next year.
